Why I chose a village setting for Descendants Of The Curse

Image
I've always loved small picturesque villages. Life seems so much more relaxed than the hustle and bustle of where I live and it's somewhere that I'd like to move to one day but my kids disagree. They think that it would be boring and leave them feeling isolated, much like the characters in the book having to make their own entertainment which goes horribly wrong. When I think of villages, I can't help but recall episodes of Midsomer murders, or films like Hot Fuzz. In fact village life is depicted as quite entertaining on both television and the big screen and this was my inspiration for the book. Small villages are the prime candidate for skeletons in the closet and age old secrets.

When reputation comes into play

Image
In this book it touches a lot on reputation both past and present. The curse was set because of a twisted tale of prejudice against the travellers that had happened upon the village. Their reputation was used to full advantage and twisted until a web of lies was spun and centuries down the line, prejudice against the one person who can help them could produce dire circumstances if they don't put their issues aside and see the bigger picture. A persons reputation is based on many things and not necessarily down to their own doing. It could be the area they live in, the colour of their skin or even their choice in clothing. In this world we judge people on their appearance and in some cases, condemn them without even taking the time to get to know them. In the book there are various scenarios that show this, including the ever famous mean girls in the lunch hall. We've all judged, or been judged, or even witnessed it at some point in our lives and though this is a work of fic

Here is another excerpt from the book for you. “So I thought we’d start with the traditional what are your deepest fears. Then move on to the summoning” Issac says holding the candle next to his grinning face which casts eerie shadows across his features. “Let’s start with the new girl. Its only polite to honour our guest” Selene says. Imogen hugs herself tighter and nods in acceptance of the challenge. “When I was little my father accidently locked me in the hallway cupboard. I was looking for my wellington boots to play out in the garden. He didn’t notice me and shut the door as he walked past. There was no handle on the inside for me to open the door and I was trapped in there for hours in complete darkness. Things kept brushing against me every time I moved I thought it was a thousand spiders crawling all over me. I screamed until my voice was hoarse but nobody heard me. Since that day I can’t stand to be in confined spaces and I’m not a huge fan of the dark either” Imo

My favourite character

Image
My favourite character has to be Naomi. She's strong, determined, sarcastic and smart. Before everything goes to hell, Naomi was selfish and determined to get out of the village at any cost, including hurting the ones she loves but that soon changed and she became the one to drive the rest on in their bid for survival. Naomi is someone to admire and though she doesn't display her affection, it's obvious in the things she does. Her sarcasm had me chuckling as I was writing and her endless energy is something I envy. We're all determined to succeed at some point but Naomi goes the extra mile, even when faced with her biggest fear and you can't help but admire her.

Survival

We all need our sleep but what if going to sleep would literally be the death of you? When an evenings entertainment of revealing their deepest fears in an abandoned house goes wrong, Isla and her friends are plunged straight into their worst nightmare as they fight to put right a curse that was set centuries ago but if that wasn't enough, their deepest fears have been overheard and lie in wait for them in their dreams. Battling with ghosts and the townsfolk that have been possessed is wearing them down and nightfall is rapidly approaching but they can't go to sleep. How long could you survive?

Excerpt from the book

Here's a little excerpt from the book for you to enjoy: He squeezes in beside her and Naomi floors the gas pedal. Isla looks down at her arms to see bite marks and several deep scratches across her skin. Glancing across to Aaron she sees that he is far worse off than she is. His eye is puffy and swollen and deep scratches cover his face. She can see blood seeping through his sweatpants, “We need to return to Issac’s. Mr McCarthy can help” Isla says.  Aaron follows her gaze. “It’s nothing. We need to get to the Miller house” he says. “And what about the invisible travellers that only you two can see? How do we deal with them?” Naomi questions. “They will follow” Aaron says. “Are you out of your fucking mind? Why trap ourselves in a broken down house to deal with one ghost only to leave us as bait for the others?” Naomi cries in outrage. “Do you want them let loose on the village? We have a way of dealing with them. The rest of Prymoor knows nothing about the curse

Why I wrote this book

Image
All through my childhood I always had a passion for the paranormal. Ghost stories and horror films were a favourite of mine, the scarier, the better. Nightmare on elm street is my all time favourite horror film and a partial inspiration when it came to writing this book, though it definitely doesn't feature a sadistic murderer adorning a glove armed with razors. I really wanted to write a ghost story and a plot formed in my mind of a sleepy village, with ancient secrets and spooky mist filled nights. As with all of my books, the plot doesn't quite stay on track and this one is no exception. There are ghosts, with a little magic and even a few zombies (not the gooey kind with a ravenous appetite for human flesh) thrown into the mix. Plenty of plot twists are there to keep you guessing, (and me, since I don't usually realise until I'm halfway through) along with a humorous character or two, and even a budding romance.  I had a lot of fun writing this book and it brou

The Blurb

There isn't much to do in a small town except exercise it's ghosts, and there is only one location to do that. Isla and her friends, desperate for some excitement, head out to the old abandoned house where a previous classmate had taken their own life. They weren't expecting much more than a few exchanged ghost stories, and they certainly weren't prepared fro another friend's brutal demise or the unleashing of generations of secrets and lies onto unsuspecting villag ers. Having recently returned to Prymoor after the tragic loss of her parents, Isla intends to finish her studies and abandon the sleepy village for good, but she and her friends find themselves struggling to survive the night. In a bid to right a wrong that was committed centuries ago they have to fight against people they've known since birth and battle with unseen forces pushing them even closer to exhaustion but they can't give in to it, death is waiting to greet them in their drea
